More than a Day!

This year’s Great Day of Service is really starting to come together.  We have added some new agencies and activities this year that are really exciting. Safehouse Outreach is an urban ministry reaching out to the homeless and providing real help.  Wish4Me assists disabled individuals find the resources they need. Click here to check out the list of agencies and the web links to learn more about them.

One of my favorite images of GDOS is of Saturday morning when we all meet at the church as we prepare to go out and serve for the day.  The worship center is filled with over 500-strong volunteers – all wearing their GDOS t-shirt , of course!  There is an excitement and electricity that you can just feel.  People are buzzing around making their final preparations for the day and the noise level starts to rise. Tommy stands up and focuses the group as we prepare to share communion together.  How appropriate and perfect this act is.  Communion is the ultimate celebration of total serving and sacrifice that our Lord gave to us.  As we receive the bread and wine – the gift of Christ – we are filled and whole.  Because He loved us, we love others.  Because he served us, we serve others.  Everyone is now ready to start their day.  We are united as the true body of Christ.  Look out world….here comes Sugarloaf UMC!!!!

  1. This event is the highlight of our year! My husband Tom and I get to love and be loved in a way that is Christ-affirming and indescribable. We cannot wait to see all of you there too! If you are new to the church this is an experience that you must have for yourself and your family! Pray that we have a sunny saturday (March 29)! He loves you, Wendy McGuire

  2. What an amazing day! There were about 40 of us that went to Safehouse Outreach in downtown Atlanta and made sandwiches, then we walked to Woodruff Park and fed the people there that were homeless. We talked with them and prayed for them as we listened to their stories. Many of them were saying, "May God bless you for serving in HIS name." And several asked when we were coming back. I think that was God's way of showing us that this should be "More Than A Day!" I hope everyone had a blessed day and will share the events of your day with everyone by posting.

  3. So many people have helped me and my family along the road of life that I can't possibly thank them all personally. For me today was to repay, in a small way all those who have prayed for and helped us over the years. The work our TEAM did helping some of the least of God's children was awesome and is most fulfilling. Also, I'm thankful that the Lord blessed me with the physical ability today to help make our project a success! Praise the Lord!!!

  4. At Sugarloaf we 'Worship God, Grow Your Life, and Serve the World.' I can't tell you how proud I am of all of you for taking the time to serve our world today! You were a part of the biggest GDOS yet. Kudos to all of the teams that went out and touched people for Jesus. I especially want to say thanks to the fantastic team that put our GDOS together. So many of these people worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make this day a success. Be sure to thank someone on the GDOS team for making 'serve the world' easy and a whole lot of fun! Tami, you put together an amazing team and got great results! Here's to great days of service!

  5. God Bless this day! I was part of the team that went down to Redemption Community Church in East Point, and God was surely with us today. We were able to accomplish all of the goals we had set forth. It's truly amazing to see how HE works through US. I have been on international mission trips, and I have participated in community outreach events here in the metro area. Each and every time I am called to serve, I take away so much more than anything I could ever give. If this isn't a testament to God's awesome Power, I don't know what is. A big, big hats off to everyone who made this day possible. Even if I do not personally know you, I am proud to call of you friend. God Bless, and Praise be to Him!

  6. The Potter's House is on a beutiful farm in Jefferson, GA. It is a Christ based program for about 180 men recovering from drugs and alcohol. This program is usually a year long. Ben and I have been going for six years. At first I thought it was about the amount of work I could get done, then I realized it was more about interacting with the men and listening to them. They neeed to know there are people outside who care about them. They were anxious to share their stories with us and to talk about how they messed up. Some of these men had never read the Bible, but it is such a blessing to hear them quote scripture and tell how God is working in their life. I can't tell you how moved you feel when you come away. As Christ said, "...I was in prison and you came to visit me." For these men it is like being in prison - away from their families and loved ones. Although children are not allowed to go, please consider this next year. We don't usually have many that go, but I can guarantee you will come away with such a good feeling that you'll want to go back next year. Thank you to everyone who made this wonderful day possible.

  7. WOW - it just keeps getting better or should I say... greater and greater! I love the Saturday morning send off - I feel closest to the core of what SUMC is about on that day every year more than any other. Recieivng communion as we "go forth" is very powerful. When we arrived at our location we receive a briefing which detailed some of the needs - the human needs really moved me. I was struck at first by how great the need in our own community it. Then the next thing I experienced was how great the volunteer calling - how many stepped up to fill the need. Not just our group for that day but every volunteer on every day. I later saw how God uses everyone. It was another awesome GDOS and I asked God to Bless all those who visit and look for assistance that day and in the future as well as all who volunteer and do His work in this place.

  8. I am the Operations Manager at the Pregnancy Resource Center of Gwinnett. We had the blessing of three awesome people who came and worked very hard to clean carpets at our Center. If it weren't for churches like yours, our ministry would not be able to offer free serves to women in need. A big thank you to Steve, Norman and Erica. May God bless you and the Body of Christ that you serve.

  9. A bunch of wonderful volunteers from Sugarloaf UMC came to Breakthru House, a longterm residential treatment center for women recovering from drug and alcohol addiction in Decatur, this weekend and our campus looks absolutely WONDERFUL since they were here! Thank you all so much for your hard work and for your time on a Saturday. We really appreciate your getting tired and dirty outside so that our clients can have a beautiful home on the outside as well as on the inside. It means so much to the clients and staff of Breakthru House to have you all come out and help us make Breakthru House an attractive and peaceful place in which to recovery and find new life. We are so grateful. Faye Stullken, Administrative Director

  10. Thank you to the wonderful group of volunteers that served at My Sister's House. My Sister's House is a crisis emergency shelter and a long term residential recovery program for women that are suffering with addiction issues, alcohol & drugs, codependency, women fleeing domestic violence as well as women dealing with any of life's issues. During the Great Day of Service our clients were treated to a movie theater experience where they viewed "Enchanted", they were able to enjoy refreshments. The clients also were treated to a wonderful day of pampering, many of the clients received complete makeovers including, manicures, make-up application, & haircuts. While the mothers were being pampered the children participated in an Easter egg hunt, arts & crafts projects and open play. The volunteers made sure that everyone felt special. The boys were so excited to have "men" on campus to toss the ball around and hang out with. There were even some volunteers assisting in the infant classroom babysitting the babies. This proved to be a an absolutely divine day for all of our clients. We are so appreciative to Sugarloaf United Methodist Church for your continued support. May God continue to lead and guide each and everyone of you! Melissa Clayton, Volunteer Services Director-Atlanta Union Mission, My Sister's House
